Delhi, India – South Africa completed a dominant run through Group D of the T20 World Cup, securing a six-wicket victory over the United Arab Emirates on Wednesday at the Arun Jaitley Stadium. The win, achieved with 40 balls to spare, maintains the Proteas’ perfect 4-0 record and firmly establishes them as contenders heading into the Super Eight stage.
Captain Aiden Markram set the tone with a blistering 28 runs off just 11 balls, punctuated by five boundaries and a six. Dewald Brevis continued the momentum, striking 36 from 25 deliveries, including three sixes and a four. Ryan Rickelton contributed a quickfire 30 from 16 balls, ensuring a swift chase of the UAE’s modest total of 122-6.
The Proteas’ chase wasn’t without minor hiccups. Markram’s aggressive innings was cut short when he missed a slog-sweep against Haider Ali and Rickelton departed after attempting a third six. However, Brevis steered the team home, finishing just seven runs shy of the target before miscuing to long off.
Earlier, the South African bowling attack restricted the UAE to a below-par score. Corbin Bosch was the pick of the bowlers, claiming 3-12 from four overs. Anrich Nortje supported with 2-28, while Kagiso Rabada and George Linde each took a wicket.
Alishan Sharafu was the standout performer for the UAE, battling through discomfort after being hit twice on the helmet to score 45 from 38 balls. However, he lacked consistent support from the rest of the UAE batting lineup, which struggled against the pace and accuracy of the South African attack.
The UAE’s innings faltered after a steady start from Aryansh Sharma (13) and captain Muhammad Waseem (22). Bosch quickly removed Sharma, inducing an edge to Maphaka, while Linde trapped Waseem lbw. Sohaib Khan and Syed Haider also fell cheaply, succumbing to the pressure exerted by Bosch and Nortje.
Sharafu’s innings ended with another attempted hook shot that looped to Maphaka, who secured the catch over his shoulder with Rabada perfectly positioned to assist. A potential collision was narrowly avoided as Rabada wisely pulled away at the last moment.
South Africa’s fielding wasn’t flawless, with three chances going to ground. Quinton de Kock dropped a straightforward catch, Nortje had a catch relay go awry due to stepping over the boundary, and Bosch failed to hold onto a simpler opportunity off Rabada’s bowling.
The victory allowed South Africa to give playing time to members of their squad who hadn’t yet featured in the tournament. Jason Smith replaced David Miller in the middle order, while Nortje and Maphaka came into the side for Marco Jansen and Lungi Ngidi, respectively. Linde also took the place of the rested Keshav Maharaj.
Looking ahead, South Africa will face a challenging Super Eight stage, with matches against India, West Indies, and Zimbabwe. Their undefeated group stage performance and comprehensive victory over the UAE demonstrate their readiness for the increased competition.
