Massachusetts State Contingency Planning for Anna Maria College

The Massachusetts Department of Higher Education has issued a notice indicating that Anna Maria College in Paxton may lack the financial resources necessary to maintain its operations and fulfill its obligations to students over the next 18 months.

On April 10, 2026, the state agency declared that it cannot confirm that the Anna Maria College has sufficient resources to be able to sustain operations at current levels and substantially fulfill its obligations to enrolled and admitted students for both the current and the subsequent academic year.

As a result of this determination, the state is now engaging in contingency planning with the Catholic institution to prepare for the possibility that the college may be unable to remain open.

The state has required Anna Maria College to develop an orderly process in the event the institution decides it cannot sustain operations at or near current levels. This planning phase is designed to protect students and ensure academic continuity.

The college stated that these pressures reflect both longstanding structural challenges in the higher education sector and the particular impact of enrollment declines on a small, tuition-dependent institution.

In an effort to stabilize its finances, the college reported that it has already undertaken a comprehensive and systematic review of its operations.

Steps already taken by the administration include reductions in staffing and operating costs. The institution indicated that further cost reductions are anticipated for fiscal year 2027 as part of ongoing financial viability reviews across the college.

Despite the state’s warnings, the college noted that early enrollment indicators have shown some movement in a positive direction.
