Mastering Basic Home Repairs: A Guide to Window Screen Replacement and Sink Installation

Tips for separating a window from its frame

Final training was conducted in Sosuri. I learned how to change screens and install sinks. Last week, Jin Il-ju, president of Bamboo Playground Social Cooperative, who had implied that trainees would have to bring mosquito nets from their homes and change them during training, asked if they had brought mosquito nets as if to check supplies . The students laughed as they told stories about how they wanted to knock down the screen, but couldn’t because the window wasn’t knocked down first.

President Jin Il-ju taught us the trick of separating the window from the window frame. You have to raise the window and remove the lower part first and then the upper part. If the bottom was so heavy that it couldn’t be lifted easily or there was a problem, he taught me how to use the principle of a lever to lift something like a drive under the window, then pull the bottom out and lower the top to remove it. Even if the possibility of replacing your mosquito net has disappeared, it is possible to replace it with a practical mosquito net, so you can learn how to do it.

Simple cleaning method for mosquito nets

It is not certain that the type of mosquito net varies depending on the size of the hole. While there are sizes that allow gnats and fruit flies to enter, there are also mosquito nets that are dense enough to prevent gnats and fruit flies from entering, but do not allow wind to pass through and allow a lot of dust to accumulate. It’s hard to say which is better. This is because choosing a home is something you choose based on your taste and lifestyle. It is said that in the past the size of the hole was large.

When cleaning the screen, the best way to clean it would be to take off all the windows and clean it, but since this would be a major project, I learned a quick and easy cleaning method. This method involves adding newspaper to one side and spraying water from a spray bottle on the other side to shake off the dust. Of course it can only be used on apartment windows in the corridor. They often tell us to use it when the seasons change.

After replacing the mosquito net, the next thing to pay attention to is the winder. It is good practice to keep the wheels attached to the bottom by lubricating them when changing the screen. This roller can also be damaged if it is not moved for a long time. Even if it is difficult to maintain every time, it is not necessarily a good idea to pay attention when changing the mosquito net.

Cut the gasket with a sword-sharp rivet nail
Cut the screen into large pieces and place it in the corner of the window.

After the theoretical lesson the students got up to change their mosquito nets. First, since I was practicing with an existing mosquito net, I ended up practicing with an old mosquito net. First remove the rubber gasket (thin gasket) surrounding the mosquito net. If you try to remove it by hand, it won’t come off, so President Jin Il-ju used a rivet nail to remove the gasket. It’s a sword-shaped nail. At home, he said, he uses a thin screwdriver to remove it. After removing the rubber gasket, the mosquito net will remove itself.

Now we have to put a new mosquito net. Beginners were told to cut it generously because it was difficult to cut it to the right size right from the start. After cutting the screen door into large pieces, I placed it on the screen frame and practiced placing the rubber seal on all four corners, rolling it with the rolling pin. To tighten the rubber seal, one trainee rolled one side of the rubber seal with a rolling pin, while another trainee stretched the other sides. After putting everything in, there was still a lot of the end of the screen that had been cut off to a large size from the beginning. To make it tidy, just place the knife and cut cleanly to complete the replacement of the mosquito net.

Actually “replacing the mosquito net” didn’t seem easy, but I immediately changed one. With this momentum, the students took turns trying different mosquito nets on their own, without the teacher’s help. President Jin Il-ju said he was surprised that the mosquito net was usually torn during his first training, but this time it was not torn.

Install and level the sink feet

In the second exercise I learned how to install a sink. A huge sink, seemingly brought from nowhere, was placed in front of the trainees. I first propped up the sink to install the feet. I held the piece with my hand and rolled my foot to tighten it. It is true that using tools makes it stronger, but you should reconsider whether you need tools just for this job. You need to consider how much of the tool you purchased and how well it will work, as it varies depending on the circumstances of each home. Once I had all the feet in place, I raised the sink.

The next thing to do is look at the closed drawer doors and see if they are level. If the left side of the front drawer door is higher, the left side is higher and the right side is lower. In other words, it’s not level. Houses that are not level must be leveled one by one. If you turn the right foot of the sink, it goes up and down. Check by slowly turning the drawer door until it is level. Next, check whether the degree of closing of the drawer door is the same on the left and right sides. If one side is more closed and the other is less closed, you can adjust them equally using the screw that turns on the sink hinge. Hold one side as a guide and turn the hinge screw on the other side to check whether the degree of closure is the same.

Installing a sink drain

The next thing I learned was how to install a sink drain. Old homes had faucets on the top of the wall, but modern homes have faucets on the bottom of the wall. As I learned how to install a drain pipe to drain water, I learned where most odors come from and how to install it to eliminate the odor.

The practical training is over. We spoke again about the ideal education desired by President Jin Il-ju. President Jin’s hope is that it is not just about receiving an education once, but that people can have different experiences and lives based on what they have received. President Jin Il-ju said: “It is not just about teaching small repairs, but students are also involved in volunteer work, and we work with students to sharpen mosquito nets, sharpen knives, sharpen old hinges, and even repair things that are slightly inconvenient in their life.” “I do,” he said.

He also said, “Rather than live like a technical expert learning more technologies for a longer period of time, I want to learn technologies for the first time and give them the courage to face challenges without being afraid even in the face of difficulties. ” Since anyone can learn technology and anyone can use it, I hope there is no fear of failure when trying. Because no one is good at everything from the start. Even if you have trouble calling someone to fix it, it’s great to be able ask for what you want and have it installed as is. And so the Sosuri instruction ended.
