[디지털투데이 AI리포터] TechCrunch reported on the 29th of last month (local time) that Mastodon, a decentralized social media (SNS), has updated its features to improve user experience.

Mastodon allows you to share your profile via QR code in your profile card and get a profile code that others can scan. The explanation is that this provides a Mastodon handle with an added description of the domain name. When you click the handle, the app displays a dialog box explaining why your username and server name are different.

The new version on Android also includes features like a link card preview that shows the author and date of a post, and a profile drop-down menu.

Mastodon’s move is interpreted as a move to make it easier for users to understand the fediverse. Fediverse refers to a networked alliance of decentralized social media like Mastodon, PeerTube, and PixelFed, rather than a centralized social media run by a specific company like X (Twitter) or Facebook.

Meanwhile, Mastodon has faced competition in the decentralized social networking space after Blue Sky was released to the public early last month. Users complained about the complex structure of Activpub (an open decentralized networking protocol), so Mastodon responded by allowing users to make Pediverse easier to understand and navigate.
