Maternal GBS6 Vaccine Found Safe and Immunogenic in Phase 1/2 Study

A phase 1/2 clinical trial published July 28, 2026, in Nature Medicine found that a hexavalent polysaccharide-protein conjugate vaccine (GBS6) is safe and immunogenic in both pregnant and non-pregnant females. The study reports that maternal vaccination induced antibody responses to vaccine serotypes in infants, providing a potential method to prevent group B Streptococcus (GBS) infections in newborns.

According to the Nature Medicine report, the GBS6 vaccine targets six different serotypes of group B Streptococcus. The trial focused on the vaccine’s ability to trigger an immune response in the mother that would transfer protective antibodies to the fetus across the placenta.

GBS6 Vaccine Trial Results and Infant Antibody Response

The randomized phase 1/2 study evaluated the safety and immunogenicity of the GBS6 vaccine. Researchers found that the vaccine was safe for the participants and successfully stimulated the production of antibodies in the mothers.
