Maui Horror: Shark Attack Leaves Surfer with Devastating Leg Amputation
Maui Surfer Suffers Shark Attack, Loses Leg
WAILUKU, Hawaii — A shark attack on Friday left a 61-year-old Maui surfer with a severe injury, authorities reported.
The incident occurred at Waiehu Beach Park, where the surfer was bitten by a shark while in the water. Responding police officers applied a tourniquet to control the bleeding, but the surfer’s leg was completely amputated just below the knee, according to a press release from Maui County.
The surfer regained consciousness while receiving treatment on the beach and was transported to Maui Memorial Medical Center in critical condition.
As a result of the attack, officials closed the beach park and issued a warning for people to stay out of the water in the surrounding area. A general warning to stay out of the water one mile in each direction from the incident site will remain in effect until at least noon Saturday, with the possibility of extension if a shark is spotted in the area.
Maui fire and marine safety officials are patrolling the waters using rescue vessels and drones to ensure public safety. State officials have provided shark warning signs and assisted in cordoning off the area.
Details about the type of shark involved in the attack have not been released.
This incident is reminiscent of a similar attack last June, in which famed surfer Tamayo Perry lost his life after being attacked by a shark while surfing on Oahu’s North Shore.
Maui County officials are urging beachgoers to exercise caution and follow warning signs to ensure their safety.
