HBO Max Rebrand Won’t Alter Creative Role in Spain, Exec Says
The upcoming return to the HBO Max name will not impact the streamer’s creative focus in Spain, according to Jose Maria Caro, Max’s Director for Local Original Productions in Spain. Caro spoke at Conecta Fiction in Cuenca, near Madrid.
Warner Bros. Discovery announced in May that it would revert to the HBO Max moniker, abandoning the Max brand launched in 2020.The rebrand is scheduled for this summer. Caro emphasized the importance of the HBO brand.
“What’s in a name? It really matters to our editorial line,” Caro said, pledging that the rebrand “doesn’t change the creative focus.” He added that the HBO name “contributes a lot of value.”
Max’s first original series commission in Spain was When Nobody Sees Us,a thriller starring Maribel Verdu and Mariela Garriga. The series, which follows two policewomen solving crimes in Morón de la Frontera, launched March 7.
Caro highlighted when Nobody Sees Us as an exmaple of the “aspiring” original series he seeks. He also mentioned rage, a drama currently in production featuring Candela Peña, Carmen Machi, Cecilia Roth, Nathalie Poza and Pilar Castro as five women in extreme situations. The focus remains on the streamer’s role in original series.
Caro assumed his current role in January, following Alberto Carullo’s departure to Mediaset. He previously worked with Warner Bros. since April 2024. He addressed a full room during a Spanish commissioners session that included representatives from Atresmedia, Amazon MGM Studios and Movistar Plus+.
Caro emphasized the importance of local production to represent the audience, as WBD plans to increase its original content in Spain.Netflix and Prime Video have also seen success with original series and films in the region.
“If we are going to represent the audience, local production is very crucial for us,” Caro said.
