Formula 1 driver Max Verstappen has spoken out about the demands of the modern paddock, comparing the environment to a zoo and stating that it leaves little room for privacy or ordinary conversation.
Paddock Demands and Lost Privacy
Speaking to De Telegraaf, the Red Bull driver explained that paddock life has shifted significantly since he entered the sport ten years ago.
It’s like a zoo. You can’t really have a quick chat with anyone anymore. It’s practically impossible. I live almost completely between my small room, the garage and the pitlane.
Max Verstappen
Verstappen noted that even the Red Bull hospitality area offers limited refuge during race weekends. Sponsors and guests regularly request his time, and while he acknowledges their intentions, the constant attention drains his energy. There are lots of guests who want something from you,
Verstappen said, as quoted by Grandprix.com. They mean well, but I also need some peace and quiet. And the more you achieve and the more you accomplish, the more people want from you. So maybe that’s a good sign.
Family Life and Future Career Planning
Those demands carry more weight now that Verstappen balances his racing career with his young daughter, Lily. Her presence has altered how he organizes his schedule at each Grand Prix event, prompting him to prioritize early departures. He now attempts to fly home on Sunday evenings and noted that she has started recognizing when he leaves for the track. She obviously has a huge influence,
he said in the De Telegraaf interview. After a race, I now always try to go straight home on Sunday evenings. I want to spend as much time with her as possible.
To ease the transition, Verstappen sometimes departs his house without making the exit obvious to her. He acknowledges that these domestic realities feed directly into his long-term career choices. This is also important for my future planning,
he stated. I don’t want to be away all the time. I want to see my children grow up.
Contract Status and Career Longevity
While Verstappen remains under contract with Red Bull, he has repeatedly emphasized that his time in Formula 1 will end when his personal priorities shift. The growing scale of the Formula 1 calendar and paddock does not match his desire to live inside that bubble indefinitely. The duration of his career will depend on factors beyond what is written in any agreement.
