Maycee barber’s UFC Fight Night Bout Canceled Due to Medical Emergency
Updated June 4, 2025
Maycee Barber, a top-ranked UFC flyweight, was forced to withdraw from her main event fight against erin Blanchfield at UFC Fight Night in Las Vegas due to a medical emergency that occurred shortly before she was scheduled to enter the Octagon. The No. 4-ranked Barber (14-2) saeid Tuesday that the cancellation stemmed from a complication during her warmups.
The timing of the incident led to some confusion, as the UFC had already aired a video package promoting the Barber vs. Blanchfield matchup. Blanchfield (13-2) told reporters she was initially informed that Barber had suffered a seizure, but Barber stated that the exact nature of the event is still under inquiry.
“We’re not entirely sure [what happened],” Barber said. “There was an event that happened in the back when I was warming up, and the doctor, the commissioners, everybody saw it… It looked like my autonomic nervous system might have been having an issue, it looked like a ‘pseudo-seizure,’ is what I was told, but I don’t have an answer. We need to run more tests.”
Barber, 27, indicated she felt well before the issue arose. Although she missed weight by half a pound the previous day, she said the weight cut felt normal. She was hospitalized Saturday and released Monday. This is not the first time Barber has faced unexplained medical issues; she was also hospitalized in 2024 for a condition that doctors have yet to fully diagnose. This medical emergency further delays her return to the UFC, as she hasn’t fought as March 2024 and had to withdraw from a july 2024 fight against Rose Namajunas.
The UFC is actively assisting Barber in consulting with specialists to determine the cause of the medical event. A timetable for her return to fighting remains uncertain.Despite her frustration,Barber expressed gratitude for her well-being.
“I see people commenting, ‘Oh, I’m glad it happened to her and not to someone who is relevant,’ and I feel that’s pretty heartless,” Barber said. “I wouldn’t wish that on anybody. I wouldn’t wish this situation, this unknown, on anybody… It was never part of my dream to get there to fight night and not walk out — to disappoint so many people and myself, it’s tough.”
What’s next
Barber will undergo further testing with specialists to determine the cause of the medical issue and develop a plan for her return to competition. The UFC is supporting her during this process.
