The official mayors of the metropolitan Region⁤ (RM) rejected criticism from José Antonio Kast⁣ (Republicans) against candidate Jeannette Jara (PC), also confirming support for ⁣the former Minister of Labor in a letter to La Moneda.

The situation unfolded during the final presidential debate organized by the National Television ⁤Association (Anatel), where Kast referenced a letter sent by the mayors of La Cisterna, Joel Olmos Espinoza; Quilicura, Paulina Bobadilla; and Cerro Navia, Mauro Tamayo, to⁣ President Gabriel Boric demanding increased security.

Kast used this letter as an chance to criticize Jara. Though,⁣ Jara responded by stating that these community leaders “support my command” and “know the capacity I have to ⁤carry out real public policies, not fantasy ones, not to threaten to hit everyone.” This was a direct reference to policies proposed by‌ Kast and Johannes⁤ Kaiser‍ (PNL).

Key policy⁣ Points & mayoral⁣ Demands

In a post on X (formerly ⁣Twitter), the⁣ mayor⁤ of La Cisterna, Joel Olmos, detailed the contents of the letter sent to the‌ president. The letter requested:

  • More police presence in ‍neighborhoods
  • an end to banking secrecy

  • Expropriation of assets belonging to drug traffickers

Olmos added, “Kast and the right‍ do not approve: they‌ prefer to continue ‌obstructing⁢ laws and ‍pardoning human rights violators.”

In the letter addressed to the president we asked for more police in neighborhoods,an‌ end to banking ⁣secrecy, stopping the entry⁣ of weapons and expropriating ‌assets of drug traffickers.

Kast and the right do not approve: ⁤they prefer to ‌continue obstructing laws and‍ pardoning‍ human⁣ rights violators.

The ⁤mayor of Quilicura, Paulina Bobadilla, echoed these sentiments on her social media‌ profile, emphasizing‍ the need for a comprehensive security strategy.

Context and Analysis

this public display of support from key mayors⁣ in the metropolitan Region is strategically important ‍for Jara’s campaign.⁣ It⁤ demonstrates a unified front within the ‍governing coalition and attempts⁤ to counter⁢ the narrative that she lacks support from local leaders⁤ directly dealing with security concerns.‌ Kast’s attempt to leverage the mayors’ letter⁤ backfired, providing Jara with‌ an opportunity to highlight policy differences and portray her opponents ⁢as obstructionist. The focus ‍on issues like⁢ banking secrecy and asset forfeiture signals a more aggressive approach to tackling⁢ organized crime, a key⁤ concern for many chilean voters.
