Rory McIlroy Driver Controversy Surfaces at PGA Championship
Updated May 28, 2025
Questions surrounding rory McIlroy’s driver overshadowed Scottie Scheffler’s victory at the PGA Championship. Speculation arose early in the tournament that McIlroy, who struggled with accuracy off the tee at Quail Hollow, had to switch drivers.
Initial rumors suggested the driver McIlroy used to win the Masters cracked. However, PGA Tour Radio reported the club failed a legality test. Kerry Haigh, chief championships officer for the PGA of America, addressed the situation during the third round. He confirmed the USGA tested equipment from about a third of the players.
“Finding driver heads that have crept over the line of conformance is not an unusual occurrence, especially for clubs that are hit thousands of times over a long period of time,” Haigh said.
Haigh added that results remain confidential to protect players unaware of non-conforming equipment. Publicly naming players could lead to unnecessary scrutiny, he said. No names were released, and ther was no confirmation regarding McIlroy’s equipment. McIlroy uncharacteristically declined to speak with reporters after his rounds. He finished three over par, tying for 47th.
Oliver Wilson, a DP World Tour player commentating for BBC Radio 5 Live, noted the leak of data led to incorrect conclusions. The USGA equipment rules are designed to ensure fair play and prevent any single player from gaining an unfair advantage through non-conforming equipment. The PGA Tour also has stringent equipment testing protocols in place.
What’s next
The focus now shifts to upcoming tournaments, with McIlroy’s equipment situation likely to remain a topic of discussion. Further clarification from McIlroy or the PGA of America may emerge in the coming weeks.
