Updated June 04, 2025
Rory McIlroy is set to compete at TPC Toronto this week for the Canadian Open, marking his return to action after a brief hiatus. He skipped both the Charles Schwab Challenge and the Memorial Tournament to focus on preparing for the upcoming U.S. Open.
McIlroy, currently ranked No. 2 in the world, is looking to capture his third Canadian Open title, having previously won in 2019 and 2022. His quest begins Thursday at 12:40 BST.
After achieving a career Grand Slam at the Masters in April, McIlroy had mixed results, finishing seventh at the Truist Championship but a disappointing 47th at the PGA Championship. Now,with the Open Championship at Royal Portrush and the Ryder Cup on the horizon,he’s focused on regaining his peak performance.
McIlroy acknowledged the challenges of maintaining motivation after achieving a major career goal. “You have this event in your life that you’ve worked towards and it happens, sometimes it’s hard to find the motivation to get back on the horse and go again,” McIlroy said.
He added that the break allowed him to “reset” and refocus on his goals for the remainder of the season. “The past two weeks have been good for me as a reset, to figure out where I’m at in my own head, what I want to do, where I want to play and reset some goals. I’ve had a pretty good first half of the season and I want to have a good second half too,” McIlroy said.
What’s next
McIlroy hopes to leverage this reset as he competes in the Canadian Open and prepares for upcoming major championships, including the U.S. Open, the Open Championship, and the Ryder Cup.
