Media Matters for America, a progressive media watchdog, filed a lawsuit against the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) on Monday, alleging the regulator is acting on behalf of former President Donald Trump and elon Musk in a “retribution” campaign.The lawsuit claims the FTC is using its power too silence the organization for reporting truthfully.
The Media Matters lawsuit, filed in Washington, D.C., seeks an immediate halt to the FTC investigation. Media Matters contends the FTC is retaliating against them for reporting on Elon Musk and X, formerly Twitter. The organization also claims that pressure from the Trump administration, Republican state attorneys, and Musk has disrupted fundraising and led to staff layoffs.
According to Media Matters, the alleged pressure has also led to their exclusion from coalitions with other advocacy groups, who fear being associated with them could lead to retribution. The role of the FTC is now under scrutiny.
Angelo Carusone, chairman and president of Media Matters, stated the lawsuit addresses a significant free-speech issue. “This is a significant free-speech issue, and Media Matters will not back down from this fight,” Carusone said.
He added,”If the Trump administration is allowed to use this unlawful investigation to punish legitimate reporting on behalf of a political ally,then there is nothing to stop it from targeting anyone who stands up and exercises their rights.”
The FTC is investigating Media Matters, along with other media credibility firms, regarding their industry relationships. The commission has issued Civil investigative Demand letters, similar to subpoenas, requiring the organizations to provide information about their operations, finances, and communications. The impact on media remains to be seen.
The FTC and X have not commented on the lawsuit. X sued Media Matters in november 2023, alleging data manipulation to create a damaging narrative. Media Matters filed a countersuit in March.
