Medical Crisis Unfolds: Government Declares Major Health Disaster

◀ Again ▶

After the large-scale departure of residents and the government’s declaration of a “major” health disaster, care is disrupted throughout the medical field.

Although some medical school professors have called for a “termination of medical care,” a national organization of medical school professors issued an emergency statement saying, “We will protect the medical field.”

This is the report of journalist Yang So-yeon.

Ambulances carrying patients cannot leave the emergency room.

Unlike usual, it took almost an hour to find a hospital bed for the transferred patient.

“I was at Gangbuk Yonsei Hospital, but my whole body kept swelling, so I rushed here to the emergency room. It took almost 55 minutes, so it took almost an hour.”

With the departure of nearly all residents, the hospital scaled back emergency room operations.

We have not been able to accept all new patients and have performed some procedures on a limited basis.

A father returned here after taking his 5-year-old, who had lost an arm, to another hospital.

″(The hospital I was going to) said there were no residents because of the strike. They said you have to apply here to find out if there are residents, so I came here.”

While many hospitals barely survive on the number of full-time professors and doctors, some professors at Seoul National University School of Medicine, who provide both medical care and lectures, are asking them to stop practicing medicine and simply teach conferences.

As concerns grew about a “medical crisis,” the Council of Professors of the National Medical School said, “We will continue to do our best to provide medical care to bridge the medical gap,” but also stressed the government’s responsibility and stressed that it would mediate between the medical community and the government.

Meanwhile, the Korean Medical Association, which opposes the expansion of medical schools, announced a street demonstration at the presidential office in Yongsan, Seoul, after today’s meeting of national medical representatives.
