Medical Technology Advances: 5-Year Cancer Survival Rate Reaches 72.1% in Korea

As the survival rate of cancer patients continues to increase due to advances in medical technology, 7 out of 10 people survive for more than 5 years.

According to the 2021 national cancer registration statistics collected by the Ministry of Health and Welfare and the cancer registry headquarters, the 5-year relative survival rate of cancer patients diagnosed between 2017 and 2021 was by 72.1%.

This is a huge increase of 29.2 percentage points compared to 42.9% in the period 1993-1995.

The number of cancer patients in Korea is estimated to be close to 300,000, and the most common cancers are thyroid cancer, colon cancer, and lung cancer.
