Asteroid 2024 PT5 to Become Earth’s Minimoon in Late September

Asteroid 2024 PT5, discovered by the NASA-supported ATLAS project in early August, will enter Earth’s orbit in late September and temporarily become a minimoon. This asteroid, from the Arjuna asteroid belt, will orbit Earth for about two months before drifting off into space again.

Characteristics of Asteroid 2024 PT5

Astronomers call 2024 PT5 a minimoon and say it is only about 10 meters in diameter. This asteroid is too small and dim to be observed from Earth, making it difficult to see even with a high-performance telescope.

Understanding the Minimoon Phenomenon

Adam Frank, a professor of astrophysics at the University of Rochester, explained this phenomenon in an interview with ABC News: “An asteroid that is wandering through space is temporarily captured by Earth’s gravity and orbits between the Earth and the Moon.” He added: “This asteroid will orbit the Earth for about two months and then be released back into space.”

Significance of the Minimoon Phenomenon

This mini-moon phenomenon is expected to attract great attention not only in astronomical research but also among the general public. Since these phenomena are very rare and, in most cases, difficult to observe with the naked eye, research conducted by astronomers with specialized equipment will play an important role.
