Auction Details and Importance
The mellon Blue was sold to an anonymous buyer after a competitive bidding process. Rahul Kadakia, director of luxury auctions at Christie’s,described the sale as a “remarkable moment,” highlighting the strong demand from collectors for extraordinary and historically significant gems. the final price, including fees, was $25.4 million, or approximately $2.58 million per carat.
The stone’s exceptional quality, graded as Fancy Vivid Blue and Internally Flawless by the American Gemological institute (AGI), contributed to its high value. Max Fawcett, Christie’s global director of jewelry, emphasized the rarity of finding a gem with both an ideal shape and vibrant color, stating, “When you have a great shape and a great color, you’re looking at the gem of gems.” The American Gemological Institute is a leading authority on diamond grading.
Ancient Context and Previous sales
The Mellon Blue was part of the private collection of philanthropist and art collector Paul Mellon for decades, until his death in 2014. It was previously sold in 2014, the year of Mellon’s passing, for $32.6 million, a price considered one of the highest ever paid for a colored diamond at auction at the time. Paul Mellon was a prominent figure in American philanthropy and art patronage.
This sale contrasts with the record price achieved for a vivid blue diamond at Christie’s in Geneva in 2016, when the 14.62-carat Oppenheimer Blue sold for over $57 million. The Oppenheimer Blue remains the most expensive blue diamond ever sold at auction.
