Mel’s the Man: Pepe Mel Commits to Long-Term Future with Contract Extension Until 2026
Tenerife have announced that coach Pepe Mel’s contract, which was originally set to expire in 2025, has been extended by an additional year. Speaking to official media, the director said he was “grateful and proud”.
Less than two months after taking charge of Tenerife, the club confirmed that manager Pepe Mel’s contract has been extended until June 2026. He agreed to a one-year deal when he replaced coach Oscar Cano. “I am very grateful and proud,” the director said through official media.
The Blanquiazul club announced this Tuesday on its official website that “Pepe Mel and Tenerife have agreed to extend his contract until June 30, 2026.” With less than 10 games remaining, he is getting close to becoming the third manager with the most games played in the history of the Segunda Division, and could even reach the top of this historic ranking as Tenerife manager during the season.
The Madrid coach said he was delighted to be able to continue on the island. “This means we are doing well and we can do good things in the future. I am of course very comfortable. “I feel like everything has been done for our support since then,” he recalled.
During his second tenure as Blanquiazul manager, he recorded three wins (including cup competitions), three draws and three defeats. He has yet to get the team out of the relegation zone, but they are at least close to safety. Moreover, during this short period of time, he invested heavily in the youth academy, giving opportunities to players such as Aaron, Matias Pezolesi, Fran Sabina and Adri Perez.
“The young players are contributing a lot and the injured players are coming back, so that will be our best signing,” Mel pointed out. “I am delighted to see the enthusiasm at work and I am satisfied that they are doing a great job for the future of the club. I feel the team is already moving in the right direction.”
