Netflix has ordered a limited series adaptation of Jonathan Franzen’s 2001 novel, The Corrections, starring Meryl Streep. The project, which received a straight-to-series order, will see Franzen adapt his own work for the screen, with Cord Jefferson (American Fiction, Watchmen) directing all episodes. The series is being produced by Paramount Television Studios.

The announcement, confirmed by Variety on April 2, 2026, marks a significant addition to Netflix’s growing slate of prestige dramas. Netflix outbid other outlets to secure the rights to the adaptation, which has been in development since 2024, with Streep attached throughout the process. The project initially began development at CBS Studios before moving to Paramount TV Studios following the Skydance-Paramount merger last year.

Franzen’s Novel and Previous Adaptation Attempts

Published in 2001, The Corrections won the National Book Award for fiction and was a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize the following year. The novel has been included on numerous lists of the best novels of the 21st century. The story centers on the Lambert family, a Midwestern family grappling with their own personal struggles as they attempt to navigate a Christmas visit orchestrated by their mother.

This isn’t the first attempt to bring Franzen’s acclaimed novel to the screen. According to Variety, a film adaptation was previously considered but never materialized. HBO also commissioned a pilot in 2011, featuring Chris Cooper, Dianne Wiest, and Ewan McGregor, but the pilot was ultimately not picked up to series in 2012.

Netflix’s Prestige Drama Push

The acquisition of The Corrections aligns with Netflix’s broader strategy to bolster its portfolio of high-quality, prestige dramas. According to Deadline, this effort is being spearheaded by VP Nora Skinner, who joined Netflix from HBO in 2024 under Head of UCAN (U.S. And Canada) Scripted Series Jinny Howe.

Netflix has been actively pursuing and securing several high-profile projects in competitive bidding situations. Other upcoming prestige dramas for the streamer include Rabbit, Rabbit starring Adam Driver, Enigma Variations starring Aaron Taylor-Johnson, So Far Gone, Black Hole, Weather Girl, and Thumblite. However, Thumblite is currently in limbo due to showrunner changes.

The Storyline and Key Players

The limited series is described as “a sharply comic portrait of a Midwestern family whose three unmoored adult siblings desperately resist their mother’s wish for one last Christmas together – each undone by the delusional ambitions that were supposed to save them from becoming their parents.” Streep will portray the mother, Enid Lambert.

Netflix official logline

In addition to Streep and Jefferson, the production team includes Franzen, who will serve as an executive producer alongside Streep. Mark Roybal and Paul Lee will executive produce for wiip, with Nicole Clemens also executive producing. Paramount Television Studios will handle production.

Cord Jefferson’s involvement is particularly noteworthy, given his recent success with American Fiction, which garnered critical acclaim. His direction is expected to bring a unique sensibility to the adaptation of Franzen’s complex and nuanced novel.

The series is expected to delve into themes of family dysfunction, societal pressures, and the search for meaning in modern life, mirroring the core elements that made Franzen’s novel a literary landmark.

No release date for The Corrections has been announced as of April 2, 2026.
