WhatsApp adds Message Translation Feature in 19 Languages

As of late 2023/early 2024,WhatsApp is introducing a new translation feature designed to connect users who speak different languages. The update, announced by Meta – the parent company of WhatsApp, Facebook, and instagram – aims to facilitate smoother communication within the messaging app’s vast global user base.
How the translation Feature Works
Users can translate WhatsApp messages by long-pressing the text of a message and selecting the ”Translate” option, then choosing their desired language. This functionality mirrors the translation capabilities already available in Apple’s iMessage application. Android users have an additional option: they can enable automatic translations for entire conversations.
Meta emphasized that translations occur directly on users’ devices. this approach is intended to protect the privacy of chats, aligning with WhatsApp’s existing end-to-end encryption and Meta’s stated policy of not reading or listening to personal messages WhatsApp Security.
Language Availability
The initial rollout of whatsapp’s translation feature offers support for 19 languages on iPhone and six languages on Android,with plans to expand language options in the future.
iPhone Language Support
iPhone users will have access to translations in the following languages: English, Spanish, Hindi, Portuguese, Russian, Arabic, Dutch, French, German, Indonesian, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Mandarin Chinese, Polish, Thai, Turkish, ukrainian, and Vietnamese.
Android Language Support
Android users will initially be able to translate messages between English, Spanish, Hindi, Portuguese, Russian, and Arabic. Meta has not yet announced a timeline for expanding language support on Android.
Impact and User Base
With over three billion users in more than 180 countries, according to Meta Meta Connect 2023 Highlights, WhatsApp is one of the world’s most popular messaging applications.The introduction of message translation is expected to significantly enhance the app’s usability for its diverse international user base.
“We hope this feature helps break down language barriers and allows users to connect more deeply,” Meta stated in a blog post announcing the change.
