Meta Platforms Inc. Has increased its investment in an artificial intelligence data center in El Paso, Texas, to $10 billion, representing a more than sixfold increase from its initial $1.5 billion commitment.
The company aims to bring 1 gigawatt of capacity online at the facility by 2028. Gary Demasi, Meta’s vice president of data center development, announced the increased investment on March 26, 2026, during an annual Borderplex Alliance summit in El Paso.
Infrastructure and Employment
The data center is being constructed on a 1.2-million-square-foot site, with ground broken in October 2025. Meta stated that the project will result in the creation of 300 new jobs and will require more than 4,000 construction workers at the peak of development.
To manage the environmental impact of the facility, Meta has committed to adding more than 5,000 megawatts of clean power to the electrical grid. The company also stated it will work with specialized nonprofits to bring fresh water to the region to mitigate the water burden caused by the center.
Since breaking ground last year, we have been proud to call El Paso home and are committed to being a good neighbor

Broader AI Investment Strategy
The expansion in West Texas is part of a significant increase in spending on AI infrastructure as Meta and other hyperscalers attempt to meet rising demand for computing resources.
In January 2026, Meta informed Wall Street that its capital expenditures for the year would reach up to $135 billion.
