Meta Quest Headset Outage: Four-Year-Old Bug Triggers Holiday Chaos

Meta Quest Headset Chaos: Four-Year-Old BugBehind Massive Christmas kernel Panic

Meta Quest users witnessed a holiday season headache when a software update rendered an unknown number of headsets unusable. Now, the tech giant has spoken up about the source of the problem: a four-year-old bug.

Our sources lead us back to the Android file system, where a rare bug caused file corruption during read/write operations. A security patch exacerbated the issue, preventing the operating system from rolling back, resulting in unresponsive devices. The issue has since been patched, with Meta confirming that the bug is fixed.

"We tracked that down – rare race condition in AOSP R/W ext4 filesystem that corrupts files + a key security patch that prevents OS rollback. Fixed bug and upstreaming."

• Mark Rabkin, VP of Horizon OS and Quest

Though not caused by firmware update v72, the rollout has been temporarily halted as a precautionary measure.

The problem seemed to disproportionately affect older Quest 2 models that had been inactive for some time, with Quest 3 and 3S devices less commonly affected. Users attempting to update their firmware were met with failed updates and unresponsive headsets.

While the exact number of affected devices remains unknown, Meta has since introduced a simplified replacement process for unusable headsets. On their Help Center, Meta noted:

"we are actively working on resolving the issue… if you have a device that is still unresponsive, please click the button below for next steps."
