Meta Rejects ‘Origami Vision’: A Mixed Reality App That Aimed to Teach Folding Skills
Origami Vision: A Mixed Reality Learning App Idea Rejected by Meta
Javier Davalos, an XR developer, proposed a mixed reality app called Origami Vision. This app aimed to teach users how to fold complex origami using an animated 3D model. The model would display folding steps, making it easy for users to follow along in their own space.
Unfortunately, Meta rejected Davalos’ application for the Meta Lifestyle accelerator. He expressed his disappointment on social media, stating that without funding, the project could not proceed.
Davalos is also the lead developer of Figmin XR, a mixed reality platform available on Meta Quest and other devices. He is currently porting this app for Vision Pro.
Meta’s Approach to Mixed Reality
Meta aims to showcase the potential of mixed reality beyond gaming. The company is funding lifestyle experiences through programs like the Meta Horizon Start, which allows developers to submit proposals for innovative concepts. This initiative reflects Meta’s belief that mixed reality can help people learn skills, engage in hobbies, and foster connections through immersive experiences.
Developers can submit ideas for lifestyle applications until November 29, 2024. Meta positions its devices, like the Meta Quest 3 and 3S, as tools that enhance daily life, enabling users to learn instruments, play sports, and express creativity in new ways.
