Farewell to Meta’s XR Trailblazer: Mark Rabkin Steps Down
In a heartfelt tweet today, Meta’s Vice President of XR, Mark Rabkin, has announced his departure from the company in March. After leading Meta’s XR (Extended Reality) division for over four years, Rabkin will bow out, citing pressing family health matters.
"I’m leaving the devs and fans of XR in good hands," Rabkin assured, hinting at an imminent reveal of his successor. It’s been a truly transformative tenure for Rabkin, who oversaw the launch of Quest 3 and Quest 3S, and steered the platform’s evolution, including the recent rebranding of Quest’s software to Horizon OS and the integration of App Lab into the Horizon OS store. His leadership has been instrumental in Meta’s push towards mixed reality and spatial computing.
Reflecting on his journey at Meta, Rabkin reveals he’s been with the company for 18 years, starting as a backend infrastructure C++ engineer in 2007. "I was young, eager, and maybe a touch too confident," he reminisced. Over the following decade, he ascended to VP roles, eventually helming Meta’s XR division since 2019.
We eagerly await Rabkin’s next chapter and wish him the very best. As for Meta’s XR future, all eyes are on who will fill Rabkin’s sizeable footsteps.
