Metro 2039, the next installment in the post-apocalyptic first-person shooter series from Ukrainian developer 4A Games, has been officially announced for release on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC. The game is set in the year 2039, continuing the narrative twenty-five years after a nuclear war devastated Moscow, with survivors enduring life in the Metro tunnels beneath the poisoned city.

The story centers on a new protagonist known as The Stranger, a reclusive individual haunted by traumatic memories who abandoned the Metro in the past but is drawn back into its depths. According to 4A Games, The Stranger’s journey forces him to confront the ghosts of his past as he undertakes a harrowing mission into the shattered ruins of Moscow — a place he swore he would never return to.

Metro 2039 introduces a new antagonistic regime led by a fanatical Spartan known as Hunter, who rules through propaganda and fear under the banner of the Novoreich. This regime has united the scattered Metro populations but does so in pursuit of a new war for the surface against a dark and terrifying enemy, further destabilizing the fragile underground society.

The game will retain the series’ signature diegetic user interface, presenting vital information such as health, ammunition, and radiation levels through in-game tools like a wristwatch and Geiger counter rather than traditional on-screen HUD elements. This design choice aims to maintain immersion during exploration, survival, combat, and stealth sequences across both aboveground and underground environments.
