Metro Manila Cops Lauded for Peaceful SONA Security Amidst Challenges

MANILA - Metro Manila police have received commendation for their successful security operations during President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr.’s fourth State of the Nation Address (SONA), ensuring a peaceful and orderly event despite adverse weather conditions. National Capital Region Police Office (NCRPO) chief Maj. Gen. Anthony Aberin lauded the efforts of the police force, highlighting the absence of untoward incidents.
Peaceful Assembly and Freedom of Expression Ensured
Maj. Gen.Aberin emphasized that the protest actions, which took place along Commonwealth Avenue, remained peaceful. This success was attributed to proactive coordination with various participating groups. “The PNP provided an environment wherein they can freely and safely exercise their right to freedom of expression and peaceful assembly,” Aberin stated.He further elaborated that the NCRPO maintained maximum tolerance, ensuring that these fundamental rights where exercised unimpeded, yet strictly in accordance with the law and the permits issued by the Quezon City government.
Inter-Agency Cooperation Bolsters Security
The successful security coverage was a testament to robust inter-agency collaboration.Aberin extended his gratitude to numerous government agencies that deployed personnel to support the operation. These included the Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA),the Bureau of Jail Management and Penology (BJMP),the Philippine Coast Guard (PCG),the Department of Health (DOH),and even elements from the military.
Teams were strategically positioned at critical chokepoints, designated rally zones, first aid stations, and within the perimeter of the house of Representatives. Aberin also highlighted the diligent work of the NCRPO’s operational and intelligence units in preempting potential threats and maintaining public order throughout the event.
Zero Incidents reported at Protest Sites
The Quezon City Police District (QCPD) officer-in-charge, Col. Randy Glenn Silvio, reported that no untoward incidents, arrests, or confrontations occurred between police personnel and the approximately 4,000 individuals who participated in various protest actions near St. Peter Parish along Commonwealth Avenue.
“This was made possible through the cooperation of protest leaders who strictly followed our security protocols,” Silvio said. “All protest activities were conducted peacefully, in accordance with Batas Pambansa Blg. 880 (BP 880).” Silvio also underscored the crucial role of inter-agency coordination and effective leadership in the overall success of this year’s security deployment.
The peaceful conduct of the SONA and associated demonstrations underscores the commitment of law enforcement and government agencies to upholding democratic rights while ensuring public safety and order.
