Teh New York Mets have made a meaningful move to strengthen their bullpen for the crucial stretch run, acquiring left-handed pitcher Josh Soto from the San Diego Padres. The deal, finalized Friday, addresses a key need for the team as they aim for a playoff berth and possibly a deep postseason run. Soto is expected to join the Mets this weekend, with his debut likely on Saturday in San Francisco.
Addressing a Critical Need for the Stretch Run
President of baseball Operations David Stearns emphasized the importance of adding a reliable left-handed arm to the bullpen. “With the injuries we’ve had from that side of the ‘pen over the course of the season, the importance that an arm from the left side can potentially have down the stretch — and hopefully into october – it was certainly something we wanted to accomplish,” Stearns stated. The Mets have been actively seeking to fortify their relief corps, and Soto’s arrival is a direct response to that objective.
The Price for Soto: Prospects with Potential
To acquire Soto, the Mets parted ways with two prospects: their 19th-ranked prospect, Jose Aracena, and an unranked prospect, Ryan Foster.
Aracena, a 20-year-old pitcher, showed flashes of high velocity, hitting 101 mph on the mound earlier this summer. Though, he struggled with control at Single-A St. Lucie, posting a walk rate of 4.9 batters per nine innings. Scouts describe him as an athletic project who has been developing new pitches and showing recent promise.Foster, 26, was a 14th-round draft pick who demonstrated impressive performance at Double-A Binghamton, recording a 1.01 ERA over 19 appearances. While Foster could contribute to a big league bullpen relatively soon, his long-term potential is considered lower than Aracena’s.
Rival scouts viewed the trade as a reasonable cost for Soto, acknowledging that the acquisition does not prevent the Mets from continuing their search for additional relief help.
Beyond the Bullpen: Other Team Needs
while the bullpen was identified as the No. 1 priority for the trade deadline, Stearns acknowledged that other areas of the team also require attention. Specifically, the Mets are looking to make impactful moves in center field and the starting rotation. However, Stearns indicated that filling these needs will be more challenging, as the team is seeking players who can “raise the ceiling of the team” rather than just adding depth.
Targeting Impactful Starting Pitching
The Mets have been linked to several high-profile starting pitchers, including Marlins ace Sandy Alcantara,as reported by the New York Post. Other potential targets mentioned include Arizona’s Zac Gallen and Pittsburgh’s Mitch Keller.Though, the price for these caliber of pitchers is expected to be steep, and the Mets anticipate facing significant competition from other teams eager to upgrade their rotations.
“You don’t know exactly what’s going to be available and what’s ultimately going to be traded,” Stearns commented on the difficulty of acquiring starting pitching at this juncture of the season. “Acquiring starting pitching at this time of year is pretty tough. I don’t know how many raise-the-ceiling type of players are going to be traded in that segment. But if those guys are available, we’ll be involved.” The Mets remain committed to exploring all avenues to improve the team as they push towards October baseball.
