Kenia López Rabadán, the president of the Mexican Chamber of Representatives, has publicly criticized the treatment of Isabel Díaz Ayuso, the president of the Community of Madrid, during her visit to Mexico. In a message shared on the social media platform X, formerly known as Twitter, López Rabadán accused certain individuals of attempting to “divide and violent” the country and expressed her gratitude for Ayuso’s visit.

The visit of the Madrid regional leader was characterized by a dialectical confrontation with Mexico’s president, Claudia Sheinbaum. This tension eventually led Ayuso to suspend the remainder of her trip and return to Spain, citing a “climate of boycott” that she attributed to President Sheinbaum and the federal executive branch.

López Rabadán addressed Ayuso directly in her communication, stating that she deeply regretted the way the Spanish politician was treated by individuals who seek to create division.

The president of the Chamber of Representatives argued that Mexico does not require further polarization, particularly while the nation deals with insecurity affecting millions of Mexican families. She noted that Mexicans living in Spain or visiting the country are treated with respect and consideration, and she expressed regret that such reciprocity was not extended to Ayuso during her stay in Mexico.

In her message, López Rabadán highlighted the deep historical and cultural ties between the two nations.

Spain is in our blood, in our language and in our surnames, as is also the pre-Hispanic history.

López Rabadán thanked Ayuso for her willingness to build a cultural bridge to share a common history and future, specifically praising her for defending values such as humanism, liberty, and respect for the law. She concluded by stating her hope for a future where Ayuso could return to Mexico and be treated with the dignity and respect deserved by all visitors, emphasizing the urgent need for a secure country free from division.

The Mexican government has formally denied the allegations of a boycott. On May 8, 2026, the government defended the conduct of the state during the visit, asserting that Ayuso’s time in the country was spent in “total freedom.”

In a brief statement issued by the Secretaría de Gobernación, the Ministry of the Interior, the government rejected claims that it had attempted to obstruct or avoid any of Ayuso’s scheduled activities.

Regarding the visit of the president of the Community of Madrid, Isabel Díaz Ayuso, to Mexico, the Secretaría de Gobernación clarifies that the tour of our country developed in an environment of total freedom, which is what characterizes our government. At no moment was there an attempt to avoid any of her public or private presentations.

The statement further emphasized that Mexico maintains an environment of total liberty that allows for the open debate of ideas and encourages a participative citizenry.
