Two high-ranking officials in the Mexico City government were fatally shot Tuesday in an assault reminiscent of the political violence plaguing other parts of Mexico. The brazen attack, however, is unusual for the capital.
Ximena Guzmán, first secretary to the mayor, and José Muñoz, a mayoral advisor, both aides to Mayor clara Brugada, were killed near colonia Moderna, authorities said. Brugada is a prominent member of the Morena ruling bloc and an ally of President Claudia sheinbaum.
Sheinbaum, informed of the incident during her morning news conference, called the slayings “lamentable” and urged caution against premature speculation. She emphasized the need to await the investigationS findings to determine the cause.
Since taking office last October, Sheinbaum has initiated a broad crackdown on organized crime, resulting in numerous arrests, drug lab seizures, and the extradition of alleged gang leaders to the U.S. She also deployed troops to the U.S. border to combat drug trafficking and illegal immigration.
