Mexico Prepares for Potential migrant Deportations Under Trump

Mexico City, Mexico – Mexican officials are preparing for a potential surge in deportations from the United States under President-elect Donald Trump,⁢ who has promised a crackdown on undocumented immigration.

During a morning press conference, Mexico city ⁣Mayor Claudia Sheinbaum⁣ outlined a two-pronged plan to address the situation.

“Regarding the possible mass deportations, ⁢we have to have two elements, of course, ⁤even with the dialog with the U.S.,” Sheinbaum stated.

The first element involves strengthening the capacity of Mexican consulates in the U.S. to assist Mexican nationals. Sheinbaum said Foreign Secretary Juan Ramón de la Fuente will soon embark⁤ on a tour to meet with consuls and ensure they ⁣are ⁣fully equipped to handle the needs of Mexican citizens.

“All areas of the consulates must be dedicated to attending ⁤to our compatriots on the other side of the border,” Sheinbaum emphasized.

The second element focuses on preparing Mexico ‍to recieve returning migrants. Sheinbaum said the government is working with the Secretariat of Governance and border⁣ state governments to ensure a smooth transition for those who might ‍potentially be deported.

“If the deportations ⁣do occur, we have to receive our compatriots well,” she explained.

Sheinbaum also defended the contributions of Mexican migrants to the U.S. economy, stating,⁤ “Mexicans contribute to the economy of the United States, just as they contribute to the economy of Mexico. Every job they do,from the fields, which ⁣have enormous value and are first-rate,to postgraduate students who stay there and develop patents,is critically important. ⁣The United ⁣States would not eat if it were not for Mexican farmworkers.”
