Michał Dymek Wins Golden Frog at EnergaCamerimage for ‘The Girl With the Needle’

Cinematographer Michał Dymek won the EnergaCamerimage Golden Frog for his work on “The Girl With the Needle.” Director Magnus von Horn received special mention at the festival’s closing ceremony in Torun, Poland. The film is Denmark’s entry for the Academy Award for international feature. It tells the story of Dagmar Overbye, a Danish woman who ran an underground adoption agency in post-World War I Copenhagen.

The Silver Frog went to cinematographer Lol Crawley for “The Brutalist,” directed by Brady Corbet. The Bronze Frog was awarded to Paul Guillaume for his work on Jacques Audiard’s musical film “Emilia Pérez.” The FIPRESCI critics prize was given to the Austrian film “The Devil’s Bath,” directed by Veronica Franz and Severin Fiala, with cinematography by Martin Gschlacht.

In the last five years, Golden Frog winners often received Oscar nominations in cinematography. Notable examples include “Joker” (2019), “Nomadland” (2020), and “Tar” (2022). “Ida,” which won the Golden Frog in 2013, went on to win the Oscar for foreign language film and received another nomination in cinematography.

Cate Blanchett led the main competition jury, which included cinematographers Anthony Dod Mantle, Jolanta Dylewska, producer Anna Higgs, costume designer Sandy Powell, and cinematographers Rodrigo Prieto and Lukasz Zal.
