Microsoft launched the Microsoft College Offer
on April 15, 2026, introducing a series of discounts and software bundles for students in the United States. The initiative is a direct response to the market impact of Apple’s MacBook Neo, which has pressured Windows laptop manufacturers with its aggressive entry-level pricing.
The new offer bundles 12 months of free Microsoft 365 Premium and Xbox Game Pass Ultimate with select Windows 11 PCs. These software bundles are available specifically to new subscribers. Students participating in the offer will receive a free Xbox controller through Xbox Design Lab.
Participating Hardware and Retailers
Several major PC manufacturers are participating in the Microsoft College Offer, including Acer, Asus, Dell, HP, and Lenovo. Microsoft is also discounting select Surface devices, a move that comes shortly after the company increased prices for its Surface Laptop and Surface Pro models.

Specific hardware deals have appeared across major retailers. Best Buy is offering a 15.3-inch Lenovo IdeaPad Slim 3x for $499.99, featuring 16GB of RAM, 256GB of storage, and a Qualcomm Snapdragon X processor. Walmart has listed the 16-inch HP OmniBook 3 for $429 with a similar hardware configuration.
Other retailers providing similar deals include Amazon, Dell, HP, and the official Microsoft online store.
Competitive Context: The MacBook Neo
The shift in Microsoft’s student strategy follows the release of the MacBook Neo, Apple’s most affordable MacBook. The device has a standard retail price of $599, but Apple offers a discounted price of $499 for students and education professionals through the Apple Education Store for the base model with 256GB of storage.
Apple also provides a higher-tier education option for $599, which increases the storage to 512GB and adds Touch ID. This $599 education price matches the standard retail price of the base 256GB model.
The MacBook Neo’s sub-$500 education pricing is viewed as a significant challenge for Windows laptop manufacturers, as it brings the MacBook line into a price range accessible to a larger demographic of potential buyers who previously found the $1,000-plus price point of other MacBooks prohibitive.
