Washington state witnessed two days of intense protests this week as microsoft employees demanded the tech giant sever ties with Israel. The demonstrations culminated in the arrest of 18 individuals on Wednesday, August 20th, following accusations of trespassing and resisting law enforcement. Approximately 35 protesters initially occupied a plaza between Microsoft’s headquarters buildings on Tuesday, departing voluntarily at the company’s request. Wednesday’s exhibition proved more confrontational, with protesters reportedly refusing to leave when asked, leading to their arrest by local police.
Protesters symbolically splashed red paint on company signage, representing what they described as bloodshed. Law enforcement officials stated they repeatedly requested the demonstrators to disperse before making arrests.
The Azure Controversy: Cloud Computing and Surveillance
The protests stem from revelations regarding Microsoft’s Azure cloud platform and its alleged use by the Israeli Defence Forces (IDF). Reports initially surfaced in The Guardian detailing the IDF’s use of Azure to store telephone data collected from the Gaza Strip and the West Bank. Microsoft responded by stating its terms of service prohibit such applications and initiated an internal legal review.
Further reporting by the Associated Press in February 2025 revealed a close working relationship between Microsoft and the Israeli Ministry of Defense. Since the October 7, 2023, hamas attack, the IDF’s utilization of commercial artificial intelligence products has reportedly increased by nearly 200%. The AP reported that the Israeli military leverages Azure for transcribing, translating, and analyzing surveillance data, cross-referencing it with internal AI targeting systems. Microsoft acknowledged the military applications of its technology but maintained that external reviews have not found evidence of its use in directly targeting civilians in Gaza.
