Microsoft’s Xbox Series XLS Sales Decline as Company Reports Strong Overall Performance

In the last quarter Microsoft achieved better results than analysts expected.

Microsoft’s announced performance for the third quarter of fiscal 2024 (ending March 31) was $61.858 billion in quarterly revenue, up 17% from the same period last year. Quarterly operating profit also increased 23.4% compared to the same period last year, reaching $27.581 billion.

On the other hand, Xbox console hardware sales continue to decline. Foreign media Kotaku reported that, according to Microsoft’s third quarter announcement, sales of the Xbox Series XLS fell by 30% compared to the previous year. The biggest problem is that in April 2023 Microsoft also announced that Xbox hardware sales were down 30% compared to the same period last year.

Considering the current situation where Xbox console hardware sales have continued to plummet, Kotaku said that the fate of the current generation Xbox appears to have been decided, and it’s easy to see why Microsoft is releasing the game on a different model era.

“Sea of Thieves,” the fourth game Microsoft plans to release on PlayStation, ranked high in the PlayStation Store based on pre-orders alone. Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella said: “Microsoft has seven games in the top 25 best-sellers on PlayStation, more than any other publisher.”

Microsoft has made it clear that it won’t give up on its console gaming hardware even if Xbox sales are poor. Microsoft promised earlier this year that its next console would represent the biggest technological leap in hardware history.
