Mike Wallace spent fifteen years shaping a massive chronicle of New York City, working alongside researchers to synthesize the history of capitalism, working-class resistance, and urban life from the beginning of the world until the fall of 2025, Jacobin reported. That historical vision culminated in the Gotham project, an ambitious framework that set the history from below against the history from above.

The Research Apprenticeship Behind Gotham at War

A researcher who worked alongside Wallace from the fall of 2011 through the fall of 2025 assembled two of Wallace’s 2,500-source bibliographies and drafted thousands of comments for Greater Gotham and Gotham at War, Jacobin reported. This apprenticeship drew inspiration from Wallace and Edwin G. Burrows, who set out nearly fifty years ago to write New York’s history anew.

That methodology sought to synthesize women’s history, working-class history, black and native history, immigration history, and the history of sexuality. It anchored its perspective in what Wallace’s droll, cheerful, and humanistic Marxism captured about the human experience in the city, according to Jacobin.

Tracing the Roots of American Expansionism and Nativism

While Hofstadter tended to focus on the darker currents of American society, Wallace and the rise of bottom-up history uncovered what his mentor had only occasionally revealed: pluralism and solidarity serving as the working class’s ultimate remedy and response.

As Jacobin pointed out, the fierce anti-immigrant street tactics of figures like Bill the Butcher—who battered heads and seized ballots from immigrant laborers in the early 1850s around the Bowery and Park Row—functioned simply as enforcers for wealthy elites, a dynamic detailed by Wallace and Hofstadter in their 1970 publication American Violence. Hofstadter observed that a high proportion of American violence came from top dogs and middle dogs, explaining why so little of it targeted state authority.

New York as Both Imperial Base and Tomb

Mary Louise Booth wrote in her 1859 History of the City of New York that Gotham blended with all the races of the earth, asserting that a mixture of many materials makes the best mortar, according to Jacobin.

The Global Echoes of American Race Law

As the nineteenth century gave way to World War I, elitist currents in America pushed a politics of panic over threatened Anglo-Saxon power.

Grant received a 1934 letter from Hitler hailing his book The Passing of the Great Race as a personal Bible, Jacobin reported. In response, young radicals at City College wore pins proclaiming themselves guttersnipes who fought fascism.

The General Strike in Minnesota and the Postwar Order

The fifteen-year research partnership concluded in the fall of 2025, just before a general strike began in Minnesota’s Twin Cities, Jacobin reported. That timeline brought the monumental project from the Occupy Wall Street protests of 2011 to the doorstep of modern labor struggles.

Drawing on the legacy of pluralism and working-class solidarity championed by historians like Herbert Croly and young scholars of the 1940s, the work reflects the enduring sentiment expressed by Angela Davis—who spent her teenage years in Crown Heights after fleeing Alabama—that freedom must remain collective, Jacobin reported.
