North Gyeongsang Province has launched a comprehensive tax enforcement campaign targeting high-value and habitual delinquents across its 22 municipal districts, running through the end of the year. The regional administration announced the initiative on October 22, 2026, to address tightened local tax revenues driven by a prolonged property market slump, according to reporting by taxtimes.co.kr.
Targeted Asset Seizure and Administrative Penalties
To execute the crackdown, the province formed debt-collection task forces headed by the deputy heads of 22 cities and counties, alongside a dedicated accountability collection system pairing tax officials directly with high-value debtors. Authorities are conducting nationwide asset searches to uncover and seize real estate and vehicles, while also investigating and attaching financial holdings, including bank deposits, stocks, funds, virtual assets, credit card sales receivables, and employee wages. Tax evaders face strict statutory administrative sanctions, such as restrictions on government-regulated businesses, credit bureau registration, and travel bans. For smaller tax arrears under 1 million won, a 111-member provincial tax collection unit operating since August is maintaining focused oversight.
Support for Financially Distressed Debtors
While pursuing aggressive enforcement against willful evaders, the province is offering tailored relief for taxpayers facing genuine economic hardship due to business closures or bankruptcies. Officials are granting installment payment plans and delaying tax disposition measures for struggling individuals. In parallel, authorities are continuing field enforcement against delinquent vehicles. During a province-wide crackdown conducted on October 15, 2026, inspectors impounded 223 license plates and collected 67 million won in overdue taxes, with mobile enforcement units scheduled to maintain ongoing roadside operations.
Jeong Kyung-hee, the province’s Tax Administration Officer, stated that to protect tax equity with honest taxpayers, the administration would thoroughly track down the hidden assets of high-value and habitual delinquents. She added that they would collect confirmed assets to the end, while simultaneously providing tailored support such as installment payments and welfare linkages for delinquents experiencing livelihood difficulties.
