Mikel Landa,the veteran Basque cyclist,is setting his sights on the Vuelta a España after a crash in the 2025 Giro d’Italia left him with a fractured vertebra. Just two weeks after the incident, Landa expressed hope for participating in the final Grand Tour of the season.
The Soudal-QuickStep rider crashed during stage one of the Giro, derailing his aspirations for a repeat of his past podium finishes. Despite the setback, the 35-year-old is optimistic about recovering in time for the Vuelta start in Turin on Aug. 23. While the Tour de France seems unlikely, Landa is focusing on his recovery and potential participation in the Vuelta a España.
“I’m sure I’ll get to the Vuelta,” Landa told Eurosport. “The fracture was a good one, it’s stable, all’s going well. The pain is lessening every day.”
Landa noted that a physiological corset allows him to move around, and his mental state is improving. An X-ray is scheduled for next week to assess his progress. He anticipates being able to start training on rollers approximately one month after the crash.
“Emotionally I felt a bit low, as I had high hopes for this Giro, I was in really good shape,” Landa said. “I had sacrificed the first part of the season for this race, but my dreams of a return to the podium and win a stage went up in smoke.”
