Tributes from the Racing Community
Trainer Philip Winters, who employed O’Connor as his stable jockey for many years, expressed his sadness at the news. “It’s very sad. What a great horseman he was. He was never found wanting in a finish. He was hungry for winners. I’d say we were never beaten when we should have won; he was that strong-willed,” Winters said.
Winters recalled a notably memorable victory at Ballingarry in 2009,where O’Connor won with Rule Supreme. “There were great scenes that day. There were buckets of water thrown over him to calm him down, and also the horse. They always had great battles.”
O’Connor looked up to fellow jockey john Thomas mcnamara, and the two enjoyed a friendly rivalry filled with banter. “He was part of the history of Irish points through the years,” Winters added.
Family and Legacy
Derek O’Connor is survived by his wife, Mags; daughters, Sophie and Rachel; son, Dylan; mother, Noreen; and twin sister, Elaine. The racing community extends its deepest condolences to his family and friends.

the rivalry between Derek O’Connor and John Thomas McNamara was a defining feature of Irish point-to-point racing for many years. Both jockeys were known for their skill, determination, and competitive spirit. Their battles on the track were frequently enough closely contested and provided thrilling entertainment for spectators.
While specific statistics on their head-to-head record are challenging to compile comprehensively, both consistently ranked among the top jockeys in the country. McNamara, tragically died in 2016 following a fall, left a similar void in the sport.
