after nearly 12 hours of debate, the Milan City Council approved the resolution to sell the San Siro stadium – also known as Meazza – to football clubs Inter Milan and AC Milan. The vote, held late into the night, passed with 24 votes in favor, 20 against, and no abstentions. The decision paves the way for the construction of a new stadium and the demolition of the historic San Siro.
Financial Details of the Agreement
The Municipality of Milan will sell the Meazza stadium and surrounding areas to the clubs for a total of €197 million. This sale is intended to fund the development of a new stadium facility.The agreement has been met with significant debate and scrutiny.
Divisions Within the Council
The approval was secured by the votes of the center-left majority. However, seven council members from the majority coalition voted against the resolution, joining opposition members from the League, Brothers of Italy, and We Moderates, and also one Forza Italia councilor. Notably, Forza Italia largely abstained from the vote, with the exception of Alessandro De Chirico, who opposed the sale.
Two council members did not participate in the vote: Marco Fumagalli, the group leader for mayor Beppe Sala, who announced his intention to resign, and Manfedi Palmeri of the center-right opposition. A total of 239 amendments were proposed, but only 25 were discussed.
