For Americans grappling with chronic low back pain,new hope emerges from an unlikely source: the mind. A study reveals that mindfulness and cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) provide significant, lasting relief, even reducing the need for opioids.
The research, spearheaded by Penn State College of Medicine and the University of Wisconsin-Madison, involved 770 adults struggling with chronic low back pain already treated with opioids. Participants in Madison, Wis., Boston, Mass., and Salt Lake City, Utah, underwent eight weeks of either mindfulness training or CBT. the results, published in JAMA Network Open, showed both therapies led to improved physical function, enhanced quality of life, reduced pain, and lower opioid doses, with benefits lasting a full year.
