Minister Lisa Paus demands an increase – Lindner brakes

The traffic light is still struggling for her household. A central point of conflict: the financing of basic child security. The ideas are very different.

Federal Family Minister Lisa Paus (Greens) insists that the planned basic child security benefits are not only combined, but also increase. “We should also talk about the fact that more work is needed,” said Paus on RTL and ntv’s “Frühstart” program. She wanted to “focus on families who are particularly affected by poverty”.

The family minister puts the annual additional costs at twelve billion euros. Finance Minister Christian Lindner does not consider an increase to be necessary, an amount “in the single-digit billions” is sufficient. He points to the fact that many families have not yet made use of all the services for children because they are not well known. The bundling in the basic security would change that and generate additional costs even without an increase in benefits.

Family Ministry wants twelve billion more

The financing of basic child security is one of the central points of conflict in the traffic light budget dispute. It is intended to bundle several existing family policy services. Paus also calls for increases in the basic income standard rate for children and in the child allowance. When it comes to child benefit paid to all parents, on the other hand, there has only just been a major jump. “So I think this is not the very first adjustment screw.”

Paus emphasized that the coalition was in good talks on basic child security. However, she asked Lindner to free up more funds. The aim is to push back structurally entrenched child poverty. “It won’t be available for free either.”
