A viral incident involving a Minnesota family and a conservative journalist has sparked debate over political tensions at protests, drawing attention from entertainment and media commentators following the altercation’s spread across social platforms.
The confrontation occurred on April 11 outside the Whipple building in Minneapolis during an anti-ICE demonstration, where Turning Point USA reporter Savanah Hernandez was covering what organizers described as a “f— ICE day” event. Hernandez stated she was surrounded by demonstrators after they identified her affiliation with the conservative group founded by Charlie Kirk.
Video footage showed Chris Ostroushko, accompanied by his wife DeYanna and daughter Paige, engaging with Hernandez. Ostroushko claimed in a subsequent interview that he was defending his family and denied any history of violence, stating his household “tends to shy away from it.” He maintained he remained in the background during the incident and only became involved after perceiving a threat to his relatives.
Hernandez provided a contrasting account, asserting the Ostroushkos initiated the confrontation. She described being shoved multiple times by DeYanna Ostroushko before Chris Ostroushko pushed her from behind and instructed his daughter to “blow the whistle in my effing ear.” Hernandez said she attempted to disengage but was prevented from leaving by the family members.
The reporter said she raised her hand only to create space after Paige approached closely with a whistle, countering claims that she struck first. Hernandez emphasized that each instance of physical contact occurred while she was trying to walk away from the scene.
Following the incident, Hernandez sought medical evaluation and received a diagnosis of concussion and multiple sprains. Law enforcement involvement escalated as the Hennepin County Sheriff’s Office recommended charges against Paige Marie Ostroushko, Lorenzo Amadeo Garcia, and Christopher Ostroushko in connection with the alleged assault on a journalist.
