A suspect is in custody following a weekend of violence targeting minnesota lawmakers. Vance Luther Boelter, 57, was arrested Sunday in connection with the shooting death of state House Democratic Leader Rep. Melissa Hortman and the wounding of state sen. John Hoffman.
The shootings, which occurred at the lawmakers’ homes in the twin Cities suburbs, triggered a massive manhunt. gov. Tim Walz had urged caution at anti-Trump rallies statewide as the suspect remained at large.
The incident began early saturday when police responded to a call reporting that Hoffman and his wife had been shot at their Champlin home by an individual impersonating a police officer, according to Drew Evans, superintendent of the Bureau of Criminal Apprehension.
Brooklyn Park Police Chief Mark Bruley said that officers, acting proactively, checked on Hortman at her home around 3:35 a.m. An exchange of gunfire ensued with the suspect, who then fled.
Inside Boelter’s vehicle, which resembled a police SUV, authorities discovered a manifesto. Bruley said the document named “many lawmakers and other officials.” One official indicated the manifesto included prominent individuals who support abortion rights in Minnesota, possibly highlighting the role of abortion rights as a secondary_keyword_1 in the attacks and the suspect’s role in the violence.
The vehicle also contained papers with the slogan “No Kings,” associated with anti-Trump rallies. Walz, echoing public safety officials, advised rally attendees to stay home “out of an abundance of caution.” While some local events were canceled, the main rally in St. Paul proceeded with a large turnout. The examination continues to explore the suspect’s motivations and the full extent of his role in the attacks.
What’s next
The investigation is ongoing, with authorities working to determine the suspect’s motives and whether others were involved. The focus remains on ensuring the safety and security of all Minnesota lawmakers and officials.
