The Destructive Power of Badminton: Understanding the Risks of Eye Injuries

Badminton, a popular sport enjoyed by millions worldwide, can have a devastating impact on one’s eyesight if proper precautions are not taken. Recently, several patients have been admitted to the Xiamen Eye Center with severe eye injuries caused by badminton. Among them was a 10-year-old boy who nearly lost his sight due to delayed treatment.

A 10-Year-Old Boy’s Brush with Blindness

The boy, who was playing badminton with his friends, was hit in the eye by a flying shuttlecock. His mother, thinking the injury was minor, took him to a nearby hospital for a check-up and then went home. However, two days later, the boy’s condition worsened, and he experienced severe eye pain and blurred vision. He was then rushed to the Xiamen Eye Center, where Dr. Huang Yanming, chief physician of the Department of Ocular Trauma and Fundus Disease II, diagnosed him with severe blood accumulation in the eye, inducing secondary glaucoma.

The Hidden Dangers of Badminton

Although badminton may seem like a harmless sport, the speed and force of the shuttlecock can cause significant damage to the eyes. Dr. Huang Yanming explained that the high-speed impact of the shuttlecock can lead to bleeding in the eye, lens displacement, and even macular holes in the fundus and retinal detachment. In severe cases, patients may experience nausea, vomiting, eye pain, and headache on the same side.

Reducing the Risk of Eye Injuries

To minimize the risk of eye injuries while playing badminton, Dr. Huang Yanming recommends the following precautions:

  • Wear sports glasses, especially for myopic individuals.
  • Avoid smashing at close range.
  • Be cautious during doubles, as teammates may accidentally hit each other with their rackets or shuttlecocks.
  • If hit in the eye, apply ice to relieve pain and seek medical attention immediately if symptoms persist or worsen.

By taking these precautions and being aware of the potential risks, badminton enthusiasts can enjoy their favorite sport while protecting their eyesight.
