After Jade Colvin, a missing Iowa teenager, is tracked to a remote farm, photos discovered on an old cellphone reveal important clues.
Investigators have confirmed that a breakthrough in the search for Jade Colvin, a 16-year-old from Des Moines who went missing in late March, came after her location was traced to a remote farmstead in rural Jasper County. Authorities say the discovery was made possible by data recovered from an outdated mobile phone found in the possession of a person of interest during a routine traffic stop.
According to the Jasper County Sheriff’s Office, the phone contained several images that investigators believe were taken during the time Jade was unaccounted for. While officials have not released the photos themselves, they stated that the visual content provided critical context about her movements and possible associations in the days following her disappearance.
Jade was last seen on March 28 near her high school in Des Moines. Her family reported her missing the following day when she failed to return home and did not respond to repeated attempts to contact her. Initial efforts focused on her known social circles and digital footprint, but yielded no immediate leads until the phone was recovered nearly three weeks later.
The device, identified as an older model Android phone not associated with Jade’s usual carrier or accounts, was seized during a traffic stop in Newton on April 15. The driver, a 21-year-old man from nearby Kellogg, was questioned but not arrested at the time. Investigators say the phone had been inactive for weeks and required specialized forensic tools to extract data, which delayed analysis until late last week.
Forensic examiners with the Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation recovered deleted files, including photographs and location metadata, that helped narrow the search to a 20-acre property used for livestock and grain storage just outside the town of Baxter. Deputies searched the site on April 17 and, while Jade was not found there, they collected additional physical evidence now being analyzed at the state crime lab.
“This wasn’t a smoking gun, but it was a significant directional shift,” said Sheriff Lynn Ritter during a brief press update on April 18. “The photos didn’t show her face, but they showed surroundings — a barn interior, a gravel driveway, unique fencing — that matched no other location we’d considered. That let us focus resources where they hadn’t been before.”
The sheriff emphasized that the investigation remains active and that no conclusions have been drawn about what happened to Jade. “We’re treating this as a missing person case until we have evidence to the contrary,” Ritter said. “Every piece of data, every tip, every hour of search — it all matters. We’re not ruling anything in or out.”
Jade’s family, who have cooperated closely with authorities, released a brief statement through the sheriff’s office expressing cautious hope. “We are grateful for the persistence of the investigators and the care they’ve shown,” the statement read. “We continue to pray for her safe return and ask that the public remain vigilant.”
The Iowa Department of Public Safety has added Jade Colvin’s case to its active missing persons registry and continues to coordinate with local, state, and federal partners. A tip line remains open, and officials urge anyone with information — no matter how minor it may seem — to contact the Jasper County Sheriff’s Office or the state’s missing persons clearinghouse.
