As MLB fans begin filling out their All-Star Game ballots, the debate rages: Vote for favorite players, home-team heroes or statistical standouts? The beauty of the ballot lies in the freedom to choose.
In the American League, the first base position presents several compelling options. While Vinnie Pasquantino could make a debut, Paul Goldschmidt seeks an eighth selection to bolster his Hall of Fame case. jonathan Aranda and Spencer Torkelson have emerged as contenders, but Vladimir Guerrero jr. remains a strong fan favorite.
Ultimately, Guerrero gets the nod. While his power numbers may be down, his all-Star aura remains undiminished. “He’s not hitting for as much power as you’d like, but he still has that All-Star supernova aura, and it’s not like he’s having a bad first half,” a source said.
Over in the National League, first base is stacked. Despite solid seasons from Matt Olson, Willson Contreras and Josh Naylor, they might potentially be overlooked due to the presence of stars like Pete Alonso, Bryce Harper and Freddie Freeman. Alonso leads the majors in RBIs, while Freeman is hitting a blistering .349.
Freeman is predicted to win the vote. “He’s hitting .349! How does he somehow get better every year?” a source said.
Second base in the AL is a tougher call. With Jose Altuve and jazz Chisholm Jr. not primarily playing the position, the field is wide open. Gleyber Torres has the best OPS among candidates.
Altuve is still expected to win. “Fine,he’s no longer primarily a second baseman… But he’s still a boldface name,” a source noted.
In the NL, Ozzie Albies is having a down year, and Jeff McNeil has missed time due to injury. Tommy Edman lacks the necessary numbers. This leaves Ketel Marte as the likely choice.
The outfield boasts several exciting contenders. Corbin Carroll, Juan Soto and Pete Crow-Armstrong are expected to be top picks.
Rafael Devers is the predicted All-Star at third base. “It makes sense that he’s having his prime season at age 28, but he might be even better next year,” a source said.
Shohei Ohtani is the obvious choice for designated hitter.
