The initial rankings for the 2026 National League and American League Rookie of the Year awards have been released by MLB.com, highlighting a group of emerging talents poised to make an immediate impact in their first full seasons. The list, compiled based on early spring performance, prospect evaluations, and expected playing time, features several high-ceiling players who could contend for the honors as the regular season unfolds.

In the National League, the top candidate is Jordan Walker of the St. Louis Cardinals, a highly touted outfielder who entered spring training as the organization’s top prospect. Walker, who made his MLB debut in late 2025, has shown improved plate discipline and power during camp, drawing praise from manager Oliver Marmol for his ability to handle left-handed pitching—a key area of growth from his rookie cup of coffee. His combination of offensive upside and defensive versatility in the outfield positions him as a frontrunner, especially if he secures a everyday role early in the season.

Close behind Walker is Jackson Chourio of the Milwaukee Brewers, the 20-year-old outfielder who debuted in September 2025 and quickly became a fan favorite with his energetic play and line-drive hitting ability. Chourio showed flashes of elite bat speed and contact skills during his brief stint, and the Brewers have indicated he will open the 2026 season in center field and bat near the top of the order. His youth, combined with a polished approach at the plate, makes him a strong candidate to build on his late-season surge and challenge for rookie honors.

Rounding out the top three in the NL is Brody Hopkins, a right-handed pitcher called up by the Arizona Diamondbacks in July 2025. Hopkins impressed with a 2.84 ERA over 38 innings in his debut season, showcasing a mid-90s fastball and a sharp slider that generated whiffs at an above-average rate. Arizona has indicated he will join the starting rotation to begin 2026, a role that would give him ample opportunity to accumulate innings and wins—key factors in rookie pitcher consideration.

In the American League, the early leader is Marcelo Mayer of the Boston Red Sox, the shortstop selected fourth overall in the 2021 draft who made his debut in August 2025. Mayer, known for his advanced defensive instincts and smooth left-handed swing, has worked extensively on reducing his strikeout rate during spring training. Red Sox manager Alex Cora has expressed confidence in Mayer’s ability to handle the No. 2 spot in the lineup, and if he can consistently make contact while maintaining his elite range at shortstop, he emerges as a prime AL Rookie of the Year contender.

Mayer is followed closely by Colt Emerson, the third baseman called up by the Seattle Mariners in June 2025 after a standout Triple-A season. Emerson displayed power and plate discipline beyond his years, hitting .290 with eight home runs and a .380 on-base percentage in 62 games. Seattle has penciled him in as the starting third baseman for 2026, and his ability to contribute offensively while playing solid defense at the hot corner places him among the top AL candidates.

The third spot in the AL belongs to Bryce Hubbart, a left-handed pitcher who debuted with the Cleveland Guardians in May 2025. Hubbart posted a 3.12 ERA in 56 innings as a reliever, using a devastating changeup and deceptive delivery to keep hitters off balance. Cleveland plans to transition him to a starting role in 2026, and if he can maintain his effectiveness over a full workload, he could be in the mix for rookie honors, particularly if the Guardians contend in the AL Central.

While these players lead the initial rankings, MLB.com emphasized that the list is fluid and subject to change based on spring training performance, injury status, and opening day roster decisions. Several other prospects, including Texas Rangers outfielder Evan Carter and Miami Marlins pitcher Ryan Carlton, were noted as potential dark horses who could rise into contention with strong performances in March.

The Rookie of the Year award is given annually to the most outstanding first-year player in each league, as voted on by the Baseball Writers’ Association of America. Eligibility is determined by MLB’s rookie status rules, which limit players to fewer than 130 at-bats, 50 innings pitched, or 45 days on an active roster prior to September 1 of the previous season. The 2026 race appears wide open, with position players and pitchers alike represented among the early leaders, setting the stage for a competitive battle as the season begins.
