After more than five decades serving hobbyists, Model Empire, a fixture in West Allis, Wisconsin, is preparing to close its doors. The family-run business, specializing in model trains, planes, and automobiles, will cease operations in the first quarter of 2026, marking the end of an era for a dedicated community of collectors, and enthusiasts.

The shop, which first opened in 1970, was founded by Alex Geiger’s mother. Mr. Geiger took over the business in 1983 and has been at the helm ever since. For 43 years, Model Empire has been his life’s work, becoming a second home not only for him but also for generations of customers.

“This is what we’ve done all these years, so it’s going to be a major change,” Mr. Geiger said, acknowledging the significant shift the closure represents. The store’s reputation was built on its extensive inventory, particularly its selection of plastic and metal model cars, as well as rare collectibles.

Surprisingly, the decision to close is not driven by financial hardship. In fact, the business experienced a surge in sales during the COVID-19 pandemic. Instead, Mr. Geiger and his wife, Roberta Geiger, his high school sweetheart of over four decades, are choosing to retire and dedicate more time to family and personal pursuits.

“Maybe there’s a little less responsibility, and maybe One can do a little more with family and with friends,” Roberta Geiger explained. The couple had offered their children the opportunity to take over the business, but they declined, pursuing their own established careers.

The closure has prompted an outpouring of nostalgia and sadness from Model Empire’s loyal customer base. Many have expressed concern about the future of the hobby in the region, lamenting the loss of a unique and irreplaceable resource. Customers have shared memories spanning decades, recalling visits dating back to the 1986s and the anticipation of receiving the store’s catalogue in the mail.

“I always knew this unfortunate day was coming,” one customer wrote online. “I started buying there in 1986… and after I moved further away I’d stop by and spend $100–150 just for old times’ sake!” Another commented, “I’ve been going there since I was a little kid, loved getting your catalogue in the mail. But I understand, and wish you guys well in semi-retirement!”

The Geigers plan to begin liquidating their extensive inventory, which includes stock stored in multiple warehouses, before transitioning to online sales. Mr. Geiger acknowledged the process will be gradual, stating, “I wish I could tell you there was a point, because I don’t think we’re going to be that aggressive on selling.”

The closure of Model Empire reflects a broader trend of independent, family-owned businesses facing challenges in a rapidly changing retail landscape. While the store’s financial stability allowed for a planned and amicable exit, the decision underscores the difficulties of succession planning and the evolving preferences of younger generations. The Geigers’ decision to prioritize personal fulfillment over continuing the business highlights a growing desire for work-life balance and a re-evaluation of traditional career paths.

For the West Allis community, the loss of Model Empire represents more than just the closure of a store. It signifies the end of a local institution that fostered a sense of community and provided a haven for hobbyists for over half a century. The shop’s walls, lined with kits, rare collectibles, and model cars, have defined a space for shared passion and connection for decades, and its absence will be keenly felt.

The store will remain open for one final month, offering hobbyists a last opportunity to visit and reminisce before the physical location closes its doors. The Geigers intend to remain involved in the hobby world through online sales and participation in shows, ensuring that their legacy continues even as the chapter of Model Empire’s brick-and-mortar presence comes to an end.
