Sandu’s Party Leads, But Coalition May Be Necessary
Preliminary results from Sunday’s parliamentary elections in Moldova indicate a significant lead for President Maia Sandu‘s Action and Solidarity Party (PAS). With approximately 87% of teh vote counted – representing 1.6 million ballots – PAS secured around 47% of the vote, according to reports from BBC News. this contrasts sharply with the 26.3% garnered by the pro-Russian electoral bloc.
Voter turnout exceeded 52%, marking a higher level of participation than in recent Moldovan elections. Sandu, who has warned of potential Russian interference following the vote, emphasized the critical importance of the election for the country’s future, receiving support from both Ukraine and Romania.
Diaspora Vote Favors Pro-Western Candidates
While initial results showed some fluctuations, analysts suggest the votes cast by Moldovan citizens living abroad – tallied only on sunday – likely favored the Western-aligned PAS party. This trend aligns with expectations that the diaspora population would not support opposition candidates.
Potential coalition Looms
Despite the strong showing, current projections suggest PAS may enter Parliament with two fewer mandates than previously held. If these results hold, President Sandu’s party will need to form a coalition government, possibly partnering with either the alternative bloc or a populist party to secure a majority.
Opposition leader igor Dodon preemptively claimed victory before the official results and has called for demonstrations on Monday.
