Attorney Molly Kottmeyer joined Whitfield & Eddy Law as its first deputy general counsel in July. She stepped into a newly created role designed to direct the firm’s internal strategic planning, succession initiatives, and legal technology adoption.
Stepping into a New Role at Whitfield & Eddy Law
Kottmeyer brings a decade-plus background in state court administration and private practice to the firm, which approaches its centennial anniversary in 2028.
Focusing on Long-Term Growth and Recruitment
The firm’s executive committee established the position to dedicate internal staff time to long-term growth and operational risk management. According to Whitfield & Eddy Law, Kottmeyer will also oversee attorney lateral recruiting as the firm plans for future sustainability.
Executive Committee Chair John Moorlach noted her established reputation in the Iowa legal community, stating, In addition to being well known and respected in the Iowa legal community, she brings great energy and talent to the firm.
A Decade of Supreme Court Administration
Kottmeyer previously served for 11 years as counsel to the chief justice of the Iowa Supreme Court under Chief Justices Mark Cady and Susan Christensen. In that role, she managed administrative operations across the state court system, collaborating with 116 district court judges, magistrates, court clerks, and juvenile court officers.
Before joining Whitfield & Eddy Law, she ran a private practice focused on legal services for Iowa nonprofit organizations.
From Public Policy to Judicial Management
Reflecting on her career path, Kottmeyer noted that her early work in public policy and as a legislative director for the lieutenant governor of Missouri in the early 2000s prompted her legal education.
Earning her Juris Doctor through night classes at the University of Missouri while working simultaneously, she ultimately spent years at the center of judicial administration before transitioning to firm management.

Kottmeyer is licensed to practice law in both Iowa and Missouri.
